Action as the Essence of Theatre Through the Lens of Three Movement Channels: Physical, Psychic, and Verbal

Title: “Action as the Essence of Theatre Through the Lens of Three Movement Channels: Physical, Psychic, and Verbal”

Igor Vladimirovich Yatsko’s masterclass explores the core notion of theatre: Action, as the vital force that animates the stage. Yatsko invites participants to analyze and master the three channels of movement that shape every theatrical action: physical movement (gesture, bodywork, staging), psychic movement (shifts in situation, silences, atmosphere, rooted in the heritage of Russian psychological theatre), and verbal movement (the flow of words and sounds, the oldest theatrical form).

Depending on which channel dominates, the nature of the theatre itself transforms. Through practical exercises and games such as “The Conductor” and “The Detective,” participants learn to distinguish, organize, and coordinate these three dimensions in order to strengthen stage presence and enhance the dynamics of performance.

Igor Vladimirovitch Yatsko- Bio

Igor Vladimirovich Yatsko (born August 30, 1964, in Saratov) is a Russian actor, director, and teacher, honored as a “Merited Artist of the Russian Federation” in 2001.

Trained at the Saratov Theatre School and later at GITIS in Anatoly Vasilyev’s class, he joined the Moscow “School of Dramatic Art” in 1990, where he became an actor, then artistic director and head of the directing and interpretation laboratory.

Heir to the theatre-laboratory tradition, Yatsko works at the crossroads of experimentation, research, and actor training. He has staged Shakespeare, Wilde, and experimental works, while teaching in several Russian institutions.
